동덕여자대학교 회화과 강수미 교수는 4월 21일 (미 동부시간 4월20일) 카네기멜론대학 Art & Machine Learning Department 초청으로 강연했습니다. 줌을 통해 강교수의 동덕여대 연구실과 카네기멜론대학 마가렛 모리슨 홀에서 동시 진행된 특강의 주제는 “How do art critics evaluate the artworks: Sumi Kang’s Metrics(미술비평가는 어떻게 예술작품을 평가하는가? 미술비평가 강수미의 기준)”였습니다.

강 교수는 20년 이상 한국의 중견 미학 학자이자 미술비평가로 축적한 이론과 경험을 카네기멜론대학의 컴퓨터공학자 및 머신러닝 전공 학생들과 공유했습니다. 또한 동덕여대 연구년 지원과 풀브라이트 Mid-career Research, Visiting Scholar로 선정되어 2021년 카네기멜론대학 The Robotics Institute에서 수행한 ‘예술과 인공지능의 융합에 관한 연구’ 성과 일부를 발표한 것입니다. 강교수는 고대 그리스의 비너스 조각부터 현대 개념미술작품까지 스펙트럼 넓게 분석한 강연에서 미학적 가치, 새로움, 호소력, 예술가의 역량, 사회적 기능을 미술작품 평가의 5가지 기준으로 제시했습니다. 강연 후반에는 한국의 ‘평화의 소녀상(The Statue of Peace)’을 제시해서 예술은 우리 사회, 역사, 공동체 속에 존재하며, 그럴 때 작품은 미술비평가의 평가를 넘어선다는 점을 강조했습니다. 현지 반응은 뜨거웠고, 강교수와 카네기멜론대학 연구자 간 후속 연구 및 발표가 이어질 예정입니다.

Su Mi Kang, professor of Dongduk Women's University gave a lecture on April 21st (April 20th, US EST) at the Art & Machine Learning Department, Carnegie Mellon University. The subject of a special lecture was “How do art critics evaluate the artworks?: Sumi Kang's Metrics)” and held simultaneously in Professor Kang’s office at Dongduk Women’s University and Margaret Morrison Hall at Carnegie Mellon University through Zoom.

Professor Kang shared her theories and experiences, which she has accumulated as an established Korean aesthetics scholar and art critic for more than 20 years, with Carnegie Mellon University's computer scientists and machine learning students. She was also awarded a Research Fellowship at Dongduk Women's University and Fulbright Mid-career Research, Visiting Scholar. So Professor Kang presented some of her achievements of 'Research on the Convergence of Art and Artificial Intelligence' performed at The Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University in 2021. In her lecture, Professor Kang analyzed a broad spectrum from ancient Greek sculpture to contemporary conceptual artwork. Based on that, she presented five metrics for evaluating works of art: aesthetic value, novelty, appeal, artist's ability, and social function. At the end of her speech, she appreciated Korea's 'The Statue of Peace', by emphasizing that art exists in our society, our history, and our community and that the work goes beyond the evaluation of art critics. The audience responded very well, and follow-up research and presentations between Professor Kang and her Carnegie Mellon University researchers will continue.
